The much-awaited fifth-generation of Honda City made its world premiere in Thailand on Monday. The sedan has seen changes to its exterior, interior as well as under the hood.
The newest entry is bigger, more powerful and is far more fuel-efficient than its predecessor. According to the information available, it comes in four trims – S, V, SV and the premium RS which is the sportier version.
The model is completely different from the last generation and is a fresh take on a model that had gone a little stale in terms of design.
It does share similarities and pays homage to the Civic and Accord but unlike those two, it does not have the fastback styling but rather has opted for the traditional three-box design along with a coupe-ish profile.
At the front, it boasts a bigger and wider chrome grille that is black for the RS version along with wraparound LED headlamps that have Daytime Running Lights installed in them. It features newly-drawn fog lamps and a fashioned hood that looks a lot like the Civic.
At the back, it has redesigned fenders that have integrated vertically positioned reflectors along with a U-shaped light signature on slimmed-down two-piece rear lights. It is kitted with multi-spoke diamond-cut alloy wheels.
On the sides, the unique character line starts from the top of the headlights and goes over the door handles, unlike the previous times when it was below them. Even the side mirrors for better visibility have been shifted from the A-pillars to the doors.
It is not just the exterior that has been revamped completely; it is the same for the interior as well.
There is a 3-spoke multi-purpose steering wheel that draws your attention followed by a huge 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system loaded Apple Car Play and Android Auto support.
Even the dashboard is fitted with vertically oriented air vents and ambient illumination. Interestingly, the traditional AC knobs have been replaced by the touch-sensitive control panel. The seats have been transformed and have new headrests.
If you think the exterior and interior had gone through drastic changes wait till we tell you about the engine. For the first time ever, the City has been fitted with a three-cylinder 1.0 liter (998cc) turbo engine boasting a BorgWarner single-scroll turbocharger that churns out 122hp and 173Nm of torque.
Amongst other technical specifications are a dual Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC). The engine is coupled with a CVT gearbox.
It is pertinent to point out that this is the only engine and transmission option available for the Thai market as the car needs work under Thailand’s Phase 2 Eco Car regulations. It is highly likely that other markets will see a 1.5-liter hybrid.
All the variants have standard safety systems such as remote engine start, Airbags, ABS braking system, EBD, BA, and VSA.
The premium RS variant has other multiple features such as the paddle shifters, LED headlamps, camera at the back, 6 airbags for safety and most of all Honda CONNECT connectivity features.
Honda City 2020 Price
The new Honda City interestingly is cheaper than the outgoing model (in the Thai market). Here are the prices of each variant:
- Standard S variant — Rs. 2.9 million (579,000 baht)
- V variant — Rs. 3.1 million (609,000 baht)
- SV trim — Rs. 3.4 million (665,000 baht)
- Flagship RS — Rs. 3.9 million (739,000 baht)
After its world debut in Thailand, the new City will hit the markets in Malaysia and India by early next year.
Sadly, for the foreseeable future, the Pakistani market will have to contend with the now two generations’ old City, which has already been discontinued elsewhere in 2014.
