AMD has officially announced the highly-anticipated high-end Vega release after a gap of over two years. The cards are said to launch in mid August with the RX Vega 56 costing $399, and the RX Vega 64 at $499.

The cards will be available in bundles as well, called Radeon Packs, with a $599 bundle which features a Vega 56 with aluminum shroud, hardware discount on the Samsung CF791 Freesync display and Ryzen 7 with its motherboard, and 2 free games (Prey and Wolfenstein II), followed by a $699 Vega 64 with a liquid-cooler bundled in.

AMD previously-announced the Vega Frontier Edition, a professional-grade card based on similar architecture, but the current offerings will trade blows with Nvidia’s GTX 1080.

Specifications

The RX Vega 56 has a base/boost clock of 1156/1471 MHz, with 8 GB HBM2 memory and 12.5 billion transistors. It has 56 compute units, 3584 stream processors. 256 texture units, and an overall performance of 10.5 TFLOPs.

Compared to that, the RX Vega 64 has base/boost clocks of 1247/1546 MHz on regular, and 1406/1677 MHz on the liquid-cooled edition, alongside 8 GB HBM2 VRAM onboard. There are 64 compute units, 4096 stream processors, 256 texture units and performance of up to 12.7 and 13.7 TFLOPs on both versions.

This means in that in terms of pure performance at least, AMD has Nvidia beat, whose GTX 1080 Ti and Titan Xp can offer performance of only 11.3 and 12.1 TFLOPS, respectively.

The company has also released a few screenshots showcasing the Vega 64’s potential, with minimum frame rates on a 55 Hz 1440p monitor on AAA titles. Minimum rates were higher on average than competition, which means a better overall gaming experience.

The cards are set to launch in 2 weeks on August the 14th. However, given AMD’s supply issues, it won’t be a surprise if you see bloated prices or lack of availability for some time after that.
