Asian curvy model thinks girls can be more than just petite and skinny

A 16 year old up-and-coming model Natalie Nootenboom is here to break some stereotypes, report HuffPost. And thank God for that!

It seems like ‘plus-size’ women will persistently have to do this until the stereotypes no longer exist.

Nootenboom is famous DJ, Steve Aoki’s neice. “I look up to him because he broke Asian norms with his music, ” the model told Revelist. She too hopes to break such norms with her modelling career. Nootenboom has signed with Muse and aims to end the idea of petite Asian women.

“The norm for Asian girls is to be, you know, petite, cute, and skinny but growing up, I kind of was taller, bigger and more awkward. I was the opposite of what people expected me to be and so I really want to use my platform to say, you know what? We’re all different. We can’t build a mold and expect people to all fit that mold,” she expressed.

“It’s careless to focus only on one thing, when it comes to creating a more diverse and inclusive fashion industry,” she stated.

“You can’t talk about diversity without addressing different kinds, diversity is going beyond ethnicity and size. The more I am able to showcase that in the industry, I will,” the model added.

Nootenboom praises her sister Yumi who is also a plus-size model and taught her to be confident. She mentioned Katie Willcox, another plus-size model and author of the book Healthy is the New Skinny, as an inspiration.

“If you’re trying your best, chasing health, your body is your body and it looks different, there’s no reason to hate it or try to conform it to a fake beauty ideal,” she shared with Billboard, earlier this month.

So far, Nootenboom has worked with Charlotte Russe and Beyond Yoga, and we are sure that she will continue to excel in her mission to tweak the ‘so called’ norms.
