Lahore (February 11, 2018): Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday asked for three weeks to submit a comprehensive plan for ensuring provision of clean water to the people of the province.
The Chief minister submitted this reply during his appearance at the three member Supreme Court bench chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar at the apex court’s Lahore registry in Clean Water case.
As hearing resumed chief justice asked Shehbaz Sharif about the waste being thrown in river Ravi. The chief minister said that the tender has been given to private companies.“These tenders do not seem right as water is being polluted for last 10 years,” chief justice observed. Sharif requested the court to give him three weeks for plan to be developed for the issue.
According to the report, submitted by the court-appointed commission comprising advocate Ayesha Hamid, 480 gallon sewerage water and 60 gallon from other sources was being drained into the river.
It is pertinent to mention here that Supreme Court of Pakistan on Saturday ordered Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif to appear before the apex court on Sunday at 11:00 am after the apex court was informed that the chief minister could not appear before court on Saturday due to his participation in an event at Badshahi Mosque.
The chief Justice was chairing a three member bench at Lahore registry in clean water case.
Earlier on Saturday morning, the apex court summoned the chief minister Punjab after it was informed regarding a report pertaining to spilling of waste in River Ravi.
The chief justice while speaking during the suo moto notice over barricades on Lahore roads in guise of security arrangements ordered the home secretary to submit an affidavit after clearing the roads leading to Jati Umrah, chief minister house, governor house, model town and other roads by tomorrow midnight.
The chief justice also inquired Shahbaz Sharif as if he is doing right things on which the chief minister nodded in affirmative and said that he was doing the right thing.The chief justice said that his acts were not aimed at doing politics and it is the responsibility of the judiciary and the administration to safeguard the rights of the people.
Justice Saqib Nisar applauded the chief minister and said that he had set a good trend likewise the chief minister Sindh by appearing before the court. Shahbaz Sharif said that they respected the judiciary and had run a campaign for restoration of judiciary in the country.
At this Justice Saqib Nisar said that he should advise the same thing to his other party leaders.The chief justice said that they are siting here and want to reiterate that elections should be held free and fair. “If PML-N would win the elections then it seems that Shahbaz Sharif would be the prime minister of the country.”
“You are after my job,” responded Shahbaz causing a burst of laughter in the courtroom.Extra Judicial killings:
In another suo moto notice over extra judicial killings in police encounters in Punjab province, the chief justice inquired the IG Punjab Arif Nawaz as to how many police encounters occurred in the province.
The IGP Punjab asked for two weeks to submit the report, however the court rejected his plea and directed him to submit report in one week.
