Beijing (November 09, 2017): United States President Donald Trump has begun talks with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing, following his lavish welcome to the Chinese capital.
Trade deficit and North Korea likely to came under discussion in the meeting. The US wants China to apply further pressure on Pyongyang but Beijing says it is doing enough.
In a show of the importance China puts on Trump’s first official visit, Thursday morning’s welcoming ceremony outside Beijing’s Great Hall of the People overlooking Tiananmen Square was broadcast live on state television – unprecedented treatment for a visiting leader.Xi is fresh from a Communist Party Congress that enshrined him as the strongest Chinese patriarch since Mao Zedong. His personal prestige is mirrored in his nation’s soaring self-confidence: China is now stronger than at any time in the modern era and its global influence is quickly growing.Trump, however, arrives in China Wednesday with the lowest approval ratings of any new president since records began. A year after his election, he is being probed by a special counsel investigating claims Russia helped him win election, and lacks domestic or global triumphs to bolster his power.
Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan on Wednesday met with US President Donald Trump and US first lady Melania Trump in the Palace Museum, or the Forbidden City, in Beijing, as the US president began his three-day state visit to China.
The two leaders enjoyed a short tea break in the Forbidden City on Wednesday afternoon. Xi warmly welcomed Trump and thanked him for his hospitality at Mar-a-Lago in April. Xi said he hopes Trump and Melania have a pleasant stay in China.
