NOTTINGHAM: England were 85 for two in reply to South Africa’s first innings 335, a deficit of 250 runs, at lunch on the second day of the second Test at Trent Bridge on Saturday.
Gary Ballance was 26 not out and Joe Root, the England captain, 52 not out.
The Yorkshire duo had so far shared an unbroken 82 for the third wicket after coming together with England in trouble at three for two on an overcast morning.
Earlier South Africa lost their last four wickets for just 26 runs after resuming on 309 for six.
James Anderson did all the damage in a spell of four for four in 16 balls that saw England’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker finish with innings figures of five for 72 in 23.2 overs.
