SHARJAH: Ireland won the toss and elected to bowl first against Afghanistan in the first one-day at Sharjah in UAE on Tuesday.

The two newest Test-playing nations, Ireland and Afghanistan, will lock horns in a series of three One-Day Internationals in Sharjah starting on Tuesday (December 5).

The ODI series will serve as preparation for the two teams ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018, to be held in March next year in Zimbabwe to determine the ninth and tenth teams that will take part in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in the United Kingdom.

The two teams are well acquainted with each other, and played a series of five ODIs, three Twenty20 Internationals and an ICC Intercontinental Cup fixture in Greater Noida in March this year. Afghanistan won the closely contested ODI series 3-2 and the 10th-ranked ODI side – Ireland is ranked 12th – will be confident of putting up similar performances in Sharjah.

The key factor for Afghanistan will be Rashid Khan, who has been in supreme form over the past 12 months and was the highest wicket-taker in the five-match series with 16 wickets at a strike-rate of 17.8. The leg-spinner, ranked ninth in the ICC ODI rankings, confounded the Ireland batsmen with his variations and with the Sharjah pitch likely to assist him, Rashid should be a handful.

Afghanistan will also be hoping its batsmen carry the momentum from winning the ICup title last week, especially Asghar Stanikzai and Rahmat Shah, who scored centuries in the win over the United Arab Emirates.
