Huawei’s Kirin 1020 Will Support 5G and Double Performance from Last Gen

Chinese tech giant Huawei is readying an even more powerful Kirin 1020 chipset that should offer double the performance of the Kirin 970, which is currently being used in Mate 10 (Huawei’s 2017 flagship).

This new chipset is going to succeed Kirin 980 which will be released this year in October with the upcoming Mate 20.

5G Ready

Unfortunately, no other details have been disclosed about when this chipset will be announced. But, it is expected to go into mass production as soon as the 5G network launches.

We know that the company’s HiSilicon Kirin 970 chipset is not as powerful in terms of raw performance as the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, which is currently dominating the world of high-end smartphones. But, with the launch of it Kirin 980, the Snapdragon 845 would be left behind as Kirin 980 is expected to be more powerful, and would be a major selling point for Huawei’s next flagship.

The in-house production should also help bring the cost of devices down and Huawei can maybe even try to compete with Qualcomm’s dominance in the mobile market.

NPU

It is to be noted that the Kirin 970 was Huawei’s first chipset with a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which was used for its AI capabilities. Future chipsets could expand and improve the NPU further, but we can’t say anything for sure.

The Kirin 970 has an 8-core CPU with a clock speed of up to 2.4GHz i.e. 4 x Cortex A73 at 2.4GHz + 4 x Cortex 53 at 1.8GHz. It has a 12-core Mali G72MP12 GPU with 4.5G Cat.18 LTE capabilities and hence a step up would be the Kirin 1020 which will be able to handle 5G.
