ISLAMABAD: The Interior Ministry has opposed the registration of Milli Muslim League (MML) as a political party.

MML is a political face of Hafiz Saeed’s proscribed Jamaat-ud-Dawah that supported an independent candidate in a recently held by-poll in Lahore’s NA-120 constituency.

The independent candidate, Sheikh Yaqoob, supported by the group, secured over 4,000 votes and finished fourth in the by-election.

The National Assembly seat was won by Kulsoom Nawaz, the wife of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

In a letter addressed to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the Interior Ministry said the ‘recent political activities of MML have been officially objected at the diplomatic level’.

Samaa.tv has learnt that an Intelligence Agency had also opposed MML’s registration as political party because the party leader Saifullah Khalid was ideologically closer to Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed.

Expressing its reservations, the Intelligence Agency said the ‘indulgence of proscribed and under observation organization in political process with an aim to win legitimacy is a serious issue and registration of such group as political party would breed violence and extremism in the politics. – SAMAA
