Are there any judges in the country who will hold a dictator like Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf accountable, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who has recently been disqualified by the top court, asked on on Monday.
“Is there any court which will hold former dictators responsible for crimes like breaking up the country accountable for their crimes,” Sharif told reporters in Islamabad.
In response to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan’s allegations, the former PM said he did not intend to exert pressure on the judiciary and he was travelling by GT Road from Islamabad to Lahore only because he wanted to go home.
Sharif, who stepped down as the prime minister when the Supreme Court disqualified him under Article 62 for not being honest and trustworthy, said only he was aware of how he managed to survive as the premier for four years.
“If one state institution will not respect another, how will we run the country?”he added.
The former premier insisted that there should be a “grand” debate in and outside parliament over why he had been disqualified merely over not disclosing salary from his son’s firm which he had not even withdrawn.
Sharif said he did not want to create an impression that he and his family were trying to dodge accountability.
“I was advised that I shouldn’t appear before the joint investigation team [probing into the Sharif family’s offshore firms on the top court’s orders] but I did because I respect the law,” he remarked.
Speaking on the National Accountability Bureau references that will be filed against the Sharif family on the Supreme Court’s orders, the former prime minister asked as to why had the graft watchdog been given six weeks for this purpose.
“Is it because they can find something more against me and include it in the references?” he asked.
The former PM said he was now focusing primarily on the welfare of the country and hot the premier’s slot but the media, the civil society and politicians need to start a debate on why no prime minister had been able to complete their full tenure.
“I haven’t misappropriated a single penny from the national exchequer and I am proud of this contribution to the country.”
