Koreas Agree To Denuclearize Peninsula

Seoul (April 28, 2018): North and South Korea have agreed to work to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons after holding a historic summit in Panmunjom on Friday.

The announcement was made in a joint declaration issued by the North’s Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in of South Korea after talks at the border. The declaration included promises to pursue military arms reduction, cease hostile acts, turn their fortified border into a peace zone, and seek multilateral talks with other countries, such as the United States.

The two also agreed to push towards turning the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953 into a peace treaty this year.Meanwhile in a post on twitter, U.S. President Donald Trump praised the meeting of North and South Korean leaders acknowledging the historic summit even as he cast doubt over how long positive diplomacy may last.

On the other hand, Russia’s Foreign Ministry says it is ready to facilitate cooperation between North and South Korea, including in the fields of railway transportation, gas and electrical energy.
