Amritsar (December 6, 2017): Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on Wednesday has called on the British government to make a “full and formal apology” to the people of India for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre nearly 100 years ago.

Sadiq Khan visited Jallianwala Bagh memorial in the city of Amritsar during his 6-day trade mission to India and Pakistan. The mayor paid tribute to the victims and extended his own apologies.

“It is one of the most horrific events in Indian history and it is shameful that successive British Governments have fallen short of delivering a formal apology almost 100 years on,” the Mayor said.

He also took to social networking site Twitter and posted, “I’m calling on the British Government to make a full and formal apology to the people of Amritsar and India for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. It is shameful that, almost 100 years later, this has not yet happened.”

On April, 13, 1919 troops from the British Indian Army fired on unarmed civilians in India, killing hundreds and wounding many more.

On the other hand, London Mayor accompanied by a 16-member delegation of UK business leaders arrived in Lahore on a three-day official visit after visiting India. Lahore Mayor Colonel (retd) Mubashir received the delegation and gave them a warm welcome at the border.
