KARACHI: Olympian Mehboob Ali will represent Pakistan in the World Athletics Championship which will be held in London from August 3-13, a senior official of Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) told ‘The News’ on Monday.
“Yes, Mehboob will feature in the 400m hurdles in London,” AFP secretary Mohammad Zafar said. Mehboob ended fifth out of seven athletes in his heat and failed to qualify for the finals of the Asian Championship held in India. His timing was 52.61. Overall Mehboob, ended 12th out of 20 athletes.
“We had just one quota place and we opted to field Mehboob as he is a young, promising athlete and the event will help him learn. We hope he will record his best timing,” Zafar said.Mehboob was part of Pakistan’s squad for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Zafar and AFP president Maj Gen Akram Sahi will also go to London to attend the international athletics governing body (IAAF) Congress to be held from August 1-3.To a query, he said that the AFP was committed to hire the services of a foreign coach. “We have written to the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB). Let’s see what the Board says,” the official said.
