Islamabad (August 8, 2017): Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday issued notice to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, asking it to elect a new president of the party following the disqualification of incumbent president Nawaz Sharif by Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Sources said that the ECP had asked the party to elect a new president as soon as possible, saying that as per law a person disqualified for being member of National Assembly cant not head a political party.

They said that in its notice the ECP had cited Political Parties Order 2002, which requires head of the party to be eligible to become member of Parliament.
On July 28, Supreme Court disqualified former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as member of the National Assembly for not declaring un-drawn salary in his nomination papers submitted for 2013 elections.
Since the disqualification, there has been growing calls for Nawaz Sharif to step aside as President PML-N for being disqualified as member of National Assembly.
