KARACHI: This is in response to Muhammad Hamid Zaman’s article titled ‘The hazardous airport’ published on September 26th. The writer talks about the incompetence of the Islamabad airport in terms of hygiene. The fact that it is in such a sorry state is upsetting, especially because it hosts most of the country’s diplomats and officials. The Jinnah International Airport, Karachi too isn’t any better. The cleanliness of the airport, especially the washrooms, is absolutely miserable. On top of that the workers deployed at different areas are generally unhelpful.

I’ve often travelled to and from Karachi alone and with family, in either case the staff at the luggage boarding counters have rarely helped us install our luggage on top of the belt. When travelling alone, the officer didn’t care enough to help a woman struggling with her luggage to be loaded on top. Even my mother in her 60s was refused any help with her luggage. However, in other countries where we travel to, the staff is generous enough to lend a helping hand without the need of renting a porter. The conditions of the airports are the first impression anyone travelling to Pakistan will get of the country, which needs to be immediately improved.
