Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday challenged former president Pervez Musharraf to return to Pakistan and face the cases against him in the courts of law.

Speaking during an informal meeting with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers and leaders at his Jati Umra residence in Raiwind, Nawaz said the time has come when violators of the law must be punished. He called the former military ruler a coward man, who is making excuses.

Nawaz said if Musharraf is brave, he should come to Pakistan and face the court cases against him. The head of PML-N also promised the government would bring Musharraf back to the country soon.

Nawaz promised the government will bring Musharraf back to the country soon. But in the same vein, he stressed what he called the need for waking up judiciary about the cases against him.

The former prime minister did not mention any particular case against Musharraf. However, the former military ruler is declared a proclaimed offender in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case and there is a high treason case pending against him.

The daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and leader of PML-N Mayram Nawaz lashed at PTI chairman’s continue hue and cry over rigging in 2013 election and said that some people only has the fate envisaged with crying and fear.

“Sudden appearance of 17-year old reference, apparently pointing out NAB’s recent corruption case in construction of road leading to Jati Umra, against Nawaz Sharif has showed the real motive behind the case is only seeking something against Nawaz Sharif after they nothing found any wrong doing against him in Panama case,” she said in her message on social media website Twitter.

She alleged that all the steps and allegations sign of fear from not only Nawaz Sharif but from his generation as well.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan said on Friday that the ideology of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is corruption.

Addressing a press conference here, the PTI chief read out some documents which he said prove the Sharif family has been looting the public for decades.

Taking aim at the former finance minister, Imran said Ishaq Dar is Nawaz’ Sharif’s frontman.

“It is all a mafia. They are all involved [in corruption],” the PTI chief alleged.

“Where is Ishaq Dar getting all the money from? They’re all interlinked. We are facing a mafia,” he said, adding that the “Hudaibiya Paper Mills is the real money trail.”

“Ishaq Dar has 11 companies in Dubai. Hussain Nawaz and Safdar are also employees of these companies,” he claimed.

Imran said the reason Nawaz is “raising so much hue and cry over his ouster is because he is afraid the rest of his [ill-gotten] wealth would be disclosed next.”

The PTI chief assured that the entire nation stands with the courts.

“The courts should not feel any pressure from this mafia.”

Imran said he had been waiting for Nawaz to start the ‘campaign’ that the PML-N leader had said he would. “But now we are finding out, these [two] brothers are starting the campaign in Saudi Arabia.”

About his London flat, the PTI chief said he provided the courts with all the documents that they asked for regarding his properties.

“But all they [Sharif family] have is a Qatari letter to show for the billions of rupees they have looted from this nation.”

He added that the Sharifs are afraid of accountability which is why they are creating “so much noise”.

“The courts should either take action or abolish the contempt of court rule,” he demanded.

About the Model Town incident and his ‘alliance’ with PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri, Imran said it is a humanitarian issue and he will always support Qadri in raising voice against the injustice.

Imran had said in a tweet on Thursday that the Panama and iqama issues were only the tip of the iceberg.

“I have always maintained Panama & Iqama were only a tip of the corruption iceberg. Tomorrow in my press conference I will reveal more facts about the ill-gotten wealth/properties stashed abroad by the Sharifs & their corruption mafia,” he had posted.

Terrorists re-entering Pakistan from western border: Interior minister

Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal
Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal said on Friday that the war against terrorism will continue in the country, explaining further that terrorists who had run away are now re-entering the country from its Western border to launch attacks.

Iqbal was speaking to the media after visiting the Bethel Memorial Church where at least nine people were killed and 50 injured in a terrorist attack on December 17.

Iqbal assured the Christian community that the federal and provincial governments stand with them in solidarity. “Every Pakistani should feel safe in the country,” he said.

Advising the country’s political parties to promote brotherhood and unity, the minister said this is not the time to pull each other’s legs.

“Dharnas will favour the terrorists who want to spread uncertainty in the country,” he said, adding that it is our duty to ensure peace and stability in Pakistan.

Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Khursheed Shah, said on Friday that he did not find anything objectionable in the recent statement of Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique, which was criticised by the army spokesperson on Thursday.

Addressing the media in Lahore, the senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader said he has examined Rafique’s remarks, delivered on December 24, and did not find anything controversial in them.

He stated that Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor should not have spoken on the matter in haste, adding that Rafique’s comments did not contain anything to warrant such a reaction [from the army spokesperson].

In a press conference on Thursday, Maj Gen Ghafoor had said “[Rafique’s] statement is very irresponsible and unwarranted as you are targeting the chain of command and the subordination system of Pakistan Army”.

On December 24, Rafique had praised the army chief’s “confidence-boosting move” of briefing the Senate.

However, the minister had said ‘others’ should also support the army chief’s stance on whom “his command is applied to”.

“They should also follow that order,” said Rafique and added that those who do mischiefs should also support the army chief.

‘PPP for FATA reforms from day one’

Continuing with his press conference, Khursheed Shah said the PPP wants democracy to continue in the country and for the general polls to be held on time.

With regards to the FATA reforms, Shah said the party has been supporting the reforms and merger of the tribal areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since day one. He claimed the government is avoiding taking a decision on the FATA issue due to its ‘commitments’ and added that he does not think the matter will drag on for long and a decision will be taken soon.

Responding to a question about the PPP leaders’ meeting with Pakistan Awami Tehreek chief Tahirul Qadri, Shah said there is nothing new in the meetings as they have occurred before. “We don’t want distances with any political party,” he asserted.

The surrender at Faizabad

When asked about some political parties’ plans of launching dharnas (protest sit-ins), he said it is the democratic right of people to protest but the greater public shouldn’t be disturbed due to dharnas. He added that the recent dharna [by a religious group in Islamabad] sent a bad message to the world as Pakistan was cast as a dangerous country.

With regards to the ongoing traders’ protest in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, the PPP leader said it is highly unjust that GB’s residents are being taxed without constitutional cover.

He made a demand that the elections of GB and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are held alongside the general elections of Pakistan.
