Pakistanis Rank 4th for Civilian Gun Ownership in the World

A new study regarding the total number of guns owned per country has found that Pakistani civilians own as many as 43.9 million firearms! More surprisingly, this figure is considered as the 4th largest worldwide. The United States, unsurprisingly, topped the list – with 393 million guns owned by civilians.

The study included 1 billion firearms in total, breaking down gun ownership figures by country, the number of firearms owned by civilians and the number of guns in use by the military. Out of this total, 857 million guns are being used by civilians in as many as 133 countries.

US citizens happen to be the most dominant owners of firearms. The Small Arms Survey revealed that Americans, who make up only 4% of the global population, own 46% of the total firearms.

The Methodology

Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva carried out the study. It collected data by carrying out a survey in 56 countries and obtaining firearms registration data from 133 countries.

To calculate the number of military-owned firearms, the study used these two approaches:

  • They used official data available for a country’s military.
  • They estimated the number of firearm held based on the use of a doctrinal category multiplier that was applied to the number of military personnel in a country.
