People of Pakistan are fighting my case: Nawaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday that the people of Pakistan were fighting his case, referring to the recent Lodhran by-election in which the PML-N candidate secured an upset victory over the PTI candidate.

Speaking to media personnel outside an accountability court where he was scheduled to attend the NAB proceedings with Maryam, Nawaz said that he had come to believe that there was nothing of substance in the NAB references.

“If they were in possession of anything credible, why would there be the need of a supplementary reference?” he asked. “I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing of substance in these references.”

The PML-N chief said that revenge was being taken against him in the name of justice. Nawaz said that he was grateful to the people of Pakistan who were rejecting the cases against him and continued to vote for him.

“I salute the people of Pakistan who are fighting my case,” he said. “This is the reaction to the conspiracies against me,” he added.

Nawaz Sharif also lashed out at PTI chief Imran Khan indirectly, stating that while he had worked day and night for the development of the nation, there were others who did not know how to take the country forward.

“We have taken the country forward and on to the path of prosperity,” he said. “While there are other politicians who don’t even know what to do.”

Nawaz said that he had played a pivotal part in the restoration of judiciary while others had arrested judges and sacked them but no action had been taken.

“No contempt of court notices were taken against those who had arrested and sacked judges,” he said.

In response to a question as to why revenge was being taken against him, Nawaz laughed and said,”I don’t know why.”
