PTA concerned over jamming of cellular services

KARACHI: The federal Ministry of Interior has written a letter to Sindh government, conveying the reservations of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) over closure of cellular phone services in the province for the security of Muharram processions, Samaa reported.

Today, authorities suspended cellular service in different cities of including Karachi, Bahawalnagar, Quetta, Lahore and Faisalabad as part of security arrangements for the Muharram processions and majalis.

The services were closed in the morning and remained shut till evening, as 8th Muharram processions were taken out across the country.

“The PTA in response has conveyed that this is an unprecedented situation where instead of blocking the communication of procession routes, complete districts are being blocked. The current closure will have serious impact on emergency services like 1122, Edhi ambulance service, hospital help lines, financial institutes and the general public,” the letter said.

“In view of the reservations of PTA, it is requested to please revisit your districts of request by focusing on procession routes and critical days for jamming of mobile services and send the revised list preferable, in line with the PTA observations,” the letter added. – Samaa
