MULTAN: “Supreme Court should take strict action against Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah. We will continue to boycott court proceedings till his resignation.”
This was said by President Multan High Court Bar Association (MHCBA) Sher Zaman Qureshi while speaking to The Express Tribune. He added that lawyers will observe complete strike in all nine districts from Rajanpur to Sahiwal and they will not appear before the judges of High Court in protest. He said Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan should be transferred immediately.
LHC Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah ordered to restore the Multan bench, following a row between Justice Qasim Khan and MHCBA President Sher Zaman Qureshi earlier this week. As per the chief justice’s orders, the Multan bench started entertaining cases from July 27 (Thursday), while the judges will resume hearings from Monday (July 31).
Earlier, a five-member LHC larger bench issued show-cause notices to MHCBA President Sher Zaman and another lawyer for committing contempt of court by misbehaving with a judge, interfering and obstructing dispensation of justice on the premises of the LHC Multan Bench.
The bench also issued a notice under the high court rules and orders to the said advocates for their suspension and/or removal from the practice of High Court. The bench was formed to proceed against delinquent lawyers after no one on behalf of the bar approached the committee, comprising Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali and Justice Ali Akbar Qureshi, or responded to the letters written by LHC registrar for resolution of dispute.
In an incident on July 24, both the lawyers along with a few others had allegedly misbehaved with Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan and obstructed judicial proceedings of his court at the Multan bench. They had also allegedly vandalised and ransacked the court premises and ripped off the name plate of the judge.
Expressing displeasure over the lawyers’ behaviour, the LHC chief justice had stopped the judges from working for the Multan bench. The chief justice had said that never in the history of LHC had anyone disrespected a judge’s name the way the protesting lawyers had. He then directed the judges to hear cases in Lahore.
Advocate Fahim Gill said few lawyers misbehaved with Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan, while the others added fuel to the fire and the matter worsened. Civil society network demanded that strict action should be taken against the black sheep among lawyers.
