Karachi (November 7, 2017): War of words between Deputy Speaker Shehla Reza and PML F MPA Nusrat Sehar Abbasi made Sindh Assembly a battle ground today.
Trouble started when the deputy speaker, who belongs to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), kicked off the Question Hour as soon as she took over the proceedings. When Abbasi, an MPA of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F), asked for her mike to be turned on so she could speak, Raza turned down her request, calling her “beta” (daughter).
“Beta you are already receiving good coverage. You’re allowed to ask a question, but not criticise unnecessarily,” she told Abbasi.Abbasi hit back by calling the deputy speaker ammi jaan (mother).
“Your job is not to criticise us ammi jaan,” she replied. “Please turn on my mike.”
Her response was followed by laughter on the opposition benches.
However, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan MPA Heer Soho intervened, asking both the deputy speaker and the PML-F MPA to uphold the sanctity of the parliament. The deputy speaker told her off too saying that she did not need to be reminded about how she should do her job.
“I am here to preside over the proceedings of the House, not listen to criticism,” she remarked.
The overall session too was marred by constant wrangling between the treasury and opposition benches.
