Sports Minister Stops SL ODI Squad for Leaving India


Colombo(December 6, 2017): Sri Lankan sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera stopped some cricketers from leaving for India to take part in a one-day series because he was unhappy with the team choice, sources said.

The players were stopped at the Colombo airport late on Monday for the overnight flight when they were ordered to return, one of the team members said. The squad, led by Thisara Perera, was later cleared by the sports minister.Dinesh Chandimal was left out of the 16-member one-day squad despite his face-saving century in the ongoing third Test.

“Most players reached the airport while Left-arm spinner Sachith Pathirana had even boarded the flight, but they were told to go back home as the team didn’t have the approval of the minister of sports,” a cricket official said.
