KARACHI: Police on Sunday baton-charged and tear-gassed participants of a protest rally that was take out by Imamia Student Organization (ISO) in Karachi.
According to our correspondent, policed used force against the rally at M.A Jinnah Road near Numaish Chowrangi when the protesters attempted to enter the Red Zone and to move to the US consulate.
The “Death to America” rally, comprised of nearly 500 protesters, was taken out to condemn recent US allegations on Pakistan.
Police chased the protesters into streets linked to the main M.A Jinnah Road, arresting at least 10 youths.
Meanwhile, the protest turned into sit-in at the Numaish Chowrangi where charged ISO workers vowed to continue the agitation till their demands are met.
The rally came hours after commander of US Forces and NATO in Afghanistan, General John Nicholson’s statement in which he claimed that top leadership of Afghan Taliban is in Quetta and Peshawar.
The Shia community’s protest also coincided with the news that Acting Assistant US Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Alice Wells, has postponed her visit to Pakistan.
