Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health, Dr. Zafar Mirza, has also resigned from Imran Khan’s cabinet. His resignation came less than an hour after the SAPM on Digital Pakistan, Tania Aidrus, stepped down from her post due to criticism over her dual nationality.

Zafar announced his departure in a tweet on Wednesday. He said that he had come to serve Pakistan on the personal invitation of Prime Minister Imran Khan after leaving the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Half an hour before his announcement, Aidrus took to Twitter to defend her decision, saying that criticism hurled towards the government due to her dual nationality wasn’t serving the purpose.

Criticism levied towards the state as a consequence of my citizenship status is clouding the purpose of Digital Pakistan. In the greater public interest, I have submitted my resignation from the SAPM role. I will continue to serve my country and the PM’s vision to my best ability.

Mirza also blamed the ‘negative discussion’ targeted at the roles of SAPMs for his resignation.

Zafar, who took over the post on 3 April 2019, said that he worked sincerely to contribute to this cause.

Pakistani people deserve better health care. [The country will] Inshallah emerge out of COVID-19 with a stronger healthcare system.

Earlier, Tania Aidrus had also presented similar reasons for her decision.

She said that her resignation is in the greater public interest and that she will continue to serve the country and the PM’s vision to the best of her ability.
